Man Arrested After Crashing Car With Four Child Passengers In Coram

A 30-year-old man was arrested after police say he crashed a car with four child passengers into an SUV on Long Island.

The crash happened in Coram at about 7:35 p.m. on Sunday, March 13, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

Yonnel Ricketts, of Middle Island, was driving a 2022 Dodge Challenger west on Middle Country Road, near the intersection of Country Club Drive, when the car veered into the center turning lane and struck a 2014 Cadillac SUV driven by a 38-year-old Coram man, SCPD reported.

Police said there were four boys in the Dodge, ages 12, 13, 14, and 15, two of whom were hospitalized with minor injuries before they were released to a family member. 

The other two children were not injured and were released to a family member at the scene, police said.

The driver of the Cadillac was hospitalized with minor injuries, and Ricketts was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, SCPD said. 

Police said Ricketts was charged with:

  • Third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance
  • Fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance 
  • Seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance 
  • First-degree criminal contempt 
  • Four counts of endangering the welfare of a child

Ricketts was also issued a number of summonses for vehicle and traffic violations, authorities said. 

His arraignment was scheduled for a later date, SCPD reported.
